My most successful one was done in tandem with a friend; we took turns going to each other's apartment and providing frank assessments of whether items were in acceptable condition, flattering or not, etc. There were some items I was holding on to for marginally sentimental reasons--but I found that I was able to let them go once I'd told her the stories associated with them.Tragic Sandwichhttp://www.tragicsandwich.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4947887970327502651.post-17291260764379458402012-03-06T11:55:23.102-05:002012-03-06T11:55:23.102-05:00I only got to the Bronx Zoo once when I lived back...I only got to the Bronx Zoo once when I lived back east--but it was a great zoo!

Because we live in L.A., when it's never really off-season for the zoo (unless it's raining, which apparently isn't going to happen this winter), I guess my tip would be to go on a weekday. Baguette has an entire bookcase of books, "inherited" from friends or given by relatives, so we've got plenty of material at the moment.

Our approach is based on what she wants to do at the moment. For several months, she refused to let us read to her; she'd turn the pages in the books and "narrate." Now she wants us to read to her--but sometimes we go through the entire book, sometimes we flip through to the pages of her choice, and sometimes we ignore the narrative and talk about what she sees in the illustrations.

I figure that if we let her enjoy books on her terms, she'll enjoy books.

(The secret I got from my mom was to read in front of children--she saw it as modeling the behavior she wanted my brother and me to adopt--and we remain avid readers to this day.)Tragic Sandwichhttp://www.tragicsandwich.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4947887970327502651.post-15549269796041566142012-02-01T09:40:31.281-05:002012-02-01T09:40:31.281-05:00I am impressed that you are not only still sane - ...I am impressed that you are not only still sane - how many 'cubs'?! - but that you are focused on reading having a presence for you and them. I never bought Dreft or any other baby-specific detergent, because we already use the Seventh Generation without dyes or scents (great if you have a gray water system as we do). I also don't think there's a need for a Diaper Genie. We just take the trash out when it gets stinky, as we do with regular trash.

And you know who's really awful about making baby clothes that fasten up the back? Ralph Lauren! As an infant, when she was done with the bottle she would close her lips tight and turn her head away. Now that she's a toddler, when she's done she holds out her plate and says, "No. No. No. No." until you take it from her. I've got three boys- a three year old singleton and two year old twins that are less than a year apart. Your posts always inspire me. :-)

We've been talking a lot about introducing gratitude into our daily lives and Thanksgiving seems like a great time to do that. There's another wonderful blog I follow written by the author of the book Raising Happiness. She recently did a blog about "gratitude practices."

I love her Thanksgiving tradition where they write on the inside of each persons place card something that they love or appreciate about each person at the meal.

http://greatergood.berkeley.edu/raising_happiness/post/Foundation_Happiness/Elizabethhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04756534344753234870noreply@blogger.com
